The Lord of the Rings star will play a psychological operations investigator on the CBS drama, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"I've been a big fan of Sean's for years and this is a part we literally tailored for him," said executive producer Gary Glasberg. "We couldn't be happier to have Sean join us."
Astin will appear alongside fellow guest star Jamie Lee Curtis, who signed up to play Department of Defence employee Charlotte Ryan in August.
"Jamie's character, Doctor Ryan, oversees a team of brilliant PsyOps agents and Sean will prove to be her go-to operative," explained Glasberg.
"We can't wait to throw him into the mix, watch it develop, and have some fun."
Astin's other television credits include playing Lynn McGill in the fifth season of 24 and a forthcoming guest stint in the second season of TNT's Franklin & Bash.
NCIS continues on Tuesdays at 8/7c on CBS.
