CBS is to launch a new spinoff series from NCIS: LA.

A two-part NCIS: LA story will introduce a new set of characters who will then reappear in their own series, Deadline reports.

The crime procedural - itself a spinoff from the original NCIS - stars Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J. NCIS is in turn also a spinoff from 1995-2005 drama JAG.

NCIS and NCIS: LA executive producer Shane Brennan will write and produce the latest addition to the franchise, which will follow a team of crime-busting agents who both work and live together.

CBS crime procedurals have often spawned spinoff shows in the past, with CSI leading to both CSI: Miami and CSI: NY and Criminal Minds giving rise to the short-lived Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour.

Brennan is already developing another pilot this season, an adaptation of the King & Maxwell novel series for cable network TNT.
