Season 4, episode 3

As the third instalment of Breaking Bad begins, Walt seems at ease back at the lab, but soon finds another obstacle in his path - a security camera has been installed and is now following his every move. Later, Walt is visited by Skyler at his condo and reluctantly agrees to speak with her. She expresses concern when she spots his bruised eye (Mike's handiwork from last week) but Walt refuses her help.

Meanwhile, Marie visits an open house, but lies about her identity to the real estate agent. When she returns home to a still-morose Hank (and interrupts his porn-watching), we see that a figurine from the open house has mysteriously relocated to the Schrader home - it seems like the stress is too much for Marie and her kleptomania has resurfaced. Back at the lab, Jesse is remaining distant after his breakdown and ignores Walt's worries about the security camera.

Breaking Bad S04E03: Saul Goodman
At Walt's home, Saul is attempting to devise a scheme that will allow Skyler and Walt to purchase the latter's former place of work - the car wash. Sometime later, another model home falls victim to Marie's light fingers. When the real estate agent notices that a spoon is missing, she follows Marie to a third home and confronts her. Marie is arrested and is forced to call Hank for assistance, with all charges being dropped thanks to one of Hank's old detective buddies. But things are not looking good for the Schraders.

Meanwhile, Jesse visits a go-karting rink alone, after Walt turns down his invitation, but even the thrill of a go-kart can't penetrate the numb feeling in his soul. When he returns home, Jesse discovers that his house has been overrun by drug addicts, who are living a debauched sex-and-drugs-fuelled life on the premises. However, Jesse allows them to stay, seemingly afraid of being alone.

Breaking Bad S04E03: Walter and Skyler
Skyler's plan to buy the car-wash also progresses - she and Saul have an actor pose as an official who tests Bogdan's waste water and classifies it as toxic. Walt seems unconvinced that the plan will work, but Bogdan cannot afford to replace his entire system and agrees to sell Skyler the car-wash business.

The Schrader family arc continues as Hank's detective friend pays him a visit, and brings up the late, lamented Gale. The detective delivers Gale's notebook, which contains detailed plans for the crystal meth super-lab. Back at Jesse's home, poor Mr. Pinkman appears to be losing it, and ends up throwing his cash into the air, watching as the drug addicts scrabble for the cash. Outside, Gus's new henchman Tyrus (Ray Campbell) watches... and waits.

Breaking Bad S04E03: Hank Schrader
As the episode concludes, Walt and Skyler are on good terms, celebrating the purchase of the car-wash with expensive champagne. However, Skyler realises that such high-class purchases will inevitably attract attention - they need a new plan to explain Walt's expenses. Meanwhile, Hank seems intrigued by Gale's notebook, and ponders his next move - could he be getting back in the game?

Breaking It Down...
* It's great to see Skyler taking on a more proactive role this week - the scenes in which she manipulates Bogdan and pulls off her scheme are fantastic.
* One of the few possible criticisms of Breaking Bad in the past was that the Marie kleptomania sub-plot was more or less dropped early into season two, so it's good to see her condition rearing its head again as things reach breaking point with Hank.
* Speaking of Hank, it'll be intriguing to see what he does next with Gale's notebook - will he reach out to Walt?
