The former Ugly Betty star will reprise her role as illegal immigrant Natalie in tonight's episode of the CBS legal drama, as former nemesis Eli (Alan Cumming) takes pity on her.
"It's more Eli's conscience getting the better of him," Ferrera told TV Guide. "He realises that his political agenda had real-world impacts on someone's life and not in a good way. He reaches out and tries to get her the help she needs to achieve her legal status."
The actress explained that Natalie is eager to accept Eli's help, despite his previous decision to expose her as an immigrant to hurt political rival Wendy Scott-Carr (Anika Noni Rose).
"It's important to remember that Natalie's case is a rarefied case," she explained. "It's not every illegal immigrant who gets politicians and high-profile lawyers coming in and saying we really want to help you."
Ferrera added that Natalie's relationship with Eli will gradually improve prior to the character's third and final appearance on April 12.
"Natalie, for some reason, brings out this more human side of him," she suggested. "I think she gets to see that, but she's still very conflicted with who she can trust."
The Good Wife continues on Tuesdays at 10/9c on CBS.
