Harvey Fierstein has signed up to appear in the third season of The Good Wife.

The actor will play a liberal, laid-back judge who presides over a case that Alicia (Julianna Margulies) is working on, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The character will appear in the fourth episode of the new season, currently expected to air in October.

Fierstein previously starred in 1988 film Torch Song Trilogy and also appeared in a recent instalment of Showtime's Nurse Jackie.

His distinctive, gravelly voice can be heard in episodes of Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother and 1998 animated film Mulan.

Michael Arden will also appear in future episodes of The Good Wife as a love interest for Alicia's brother Owen (Dallas Roberts).

The legal drama returns to CBS on September 25.
