The (500) Days of Summer actress revealed that she considers her character Jess to be "awesome", saying that she is thankful to have found such a good role.
"I don't think there are that many awesome roles out there, whether we're talking about movies or TV," Deschanel told Entertainment Weekly. "It's rare that you read something this funny and well-written. And if I had read this character in a movie script. I would've jumped on board immediately."
The actress went on to say that she feels a kinship with Jess, insisting that she admires the character's ability to be herself.
Deschanel explained: "I grew up the type of person where I always thought I was being normal and everybody else would think I was being weird all the time. I like that [Jess] is completely herself and unabashedly emotional, but not in an obnoxious way."
She continued: "She means well but she just messes up sometimes…. It felt really like a very easy decision to say yes to."
Deschanel recently described her character in New Girl as a younger version of herself.
Earlier this month, the actress said that she is often mistaken for Katy Perry, revealing that she has been approached by fans of the singer on numerous occasions and has even been asked for Perry's autograph.
New Girl premieres on Tuesday, September 20, at 9/8c on Fox.
