Stowe's character Victoria Grayson boarded a plane that later exploded in the episode 'Reckoning', leaving her final fate unclear.
"I talked the creator [Mike Kelley] into putting me on that plane," Stowe explained. "Originally he wanted [just] the implication that I died on the plane... and I was like no, you have to have the whole thing - put me on that plane!"
The actress suggested that Victoria being seen to step onto the plane was "the creatively strong choice to make".
"At that time, we didn't know whether we would be picked up for a second season - you never know," she explained.
"We had a long discussion, and in the end [if the show had ended there] everything would have gone to smoke and the whole plan would have been destroyed, which I think is very telling about this whole revenge thing."
Revenge was ultimately picked up for a second season, which will debut on ABC this fall.
