However, the 51-year-old has been forced to drop out of future episodes due to a scheduling conflict, with producer Melissa Loy explaining that Sanada's role in movie The Wolverine - starring Hugh Jackman - made it impossible for him to reprise his Revenge part.

"Geographically, with our schedule being what it is, it was getting a little bit challenging," Loy told TV Guide.

"We would have had to fly him in and out of Australia [where Wolverine was filming], but [still] wouldn't have had him on the days we necessarily needed him. We tried to figure out a bunch of different scenarios, but ultimately it was too difficult."

New cast addition Tagawa will bring "something fresh, different and new to the character", Loy insisted.

"He's fantastic," she said. "We didn't want to trick our audience [with the casting change]."

Tagawa's past credits include movie roles in 1989 James Bond film Licence to Kill, 1995 video game adaptation Mortal Kombat and Tim Burton's 2001 Planet of the Apes remake. His television appearances include a recent stint on Hawaii Five-0 and two episodes of Heroes in 2007.

Revenge returns to ABC on September 30. In the UK, the Emily VanCamp thriller airs on E4.
