It was confirmed in November that the actress will play Carrie Anderson, a CIA officer working to prove that a US soldier (Damian Lewis) is planning a terrorist attack.
"It's... a psychological thriller and it's very character-based," Danes told TVLine of the project, which also stars Mandy Patinkin, Laura Fraser and David Harewood.
She explained that the potential series will be less action-packed than producer Howard Gordon's former show 24.
"It's a lot less kicking and shooting than it is political intrigue," she explained.
Danes, who recently won a Golden Globe for her role in HBO mini-series Temple Grandin, also revealed that her character will suffer from bipolar disorder.
Production on the Homeland pilot began earlier this month in Charlotte, North Carolina.
