Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie in NBC's 'Fashion Star' - video preview

Jessica Simpson and Nicole Richie feature in a new promo for NBC's upcoming design competition Fashion Star.

The mentors - described as a "billionaire fashion brand" and a "trendsetter with two global brands" respectively - will be joined by fellow mentor John Varvatos, who previously designed for Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein and now owns his own international brand.

Elle Macpherson serves as the host and executive producer.

Fashion Star will see 14 aspiring designers battling to win a multi-million dollar prize to launch their collections in three of America's largest retailers: Macy's, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Each episode will begin with a fashion show based around a weekly challenge, where the retailers will be able to bid on designs that they want to buy and exclusively carry in their stores. Designers who do not sell any designs that week could face elimination, although the celebrity mentors will have the chance to save one designer.

Viewers will be able to buy the winning designs as soon as each episode ends.

In the promo, Macpherson says: "I don't want to find the next great fashion designer, I want to find the next fashion icon."

Fashion Star premieres Tuesday, March 13th 9.30/8.30c on NBC.
