'Dallas' JR Ewing to be murdered in whodunnit plot

By
Dallas icon JR Ewing is to be killed off as part of a whodunnit plot.

It was previously announced that JR would be written out of the revamped TNT soap following the death of actor Larry Hagman, who had played the character since 1978.

The character will be murdered by a mystery assassin midway through the show's second season, TVLine has now revealed.

The plot reflects the famous 'Who Shot JR' storyline from the original Dallas, in which Hagman's ruthless oil tycoon was felled by an unseen gunman.

"Having JR die of natural causes would have been completely inappropriate," said showrunner Cynthia Cidre. "Not only to the character, but also to Larry Hagman."

JR's funeral will air as the eighth episode of Dallas season two, with a number of former stars expected to return for the March 11 instalment.

The Dallas season two premiere will air on TNT on January 28. Channel 5 in the UK will screen new episodes the day after US transmission.
