The iconic villain will feature in CBS's update of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, it was confirmed at this year's Comic-Con.
Doherty told reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour that he wants to remain faithful to the original Holmes canon, according to Deadline.
"We want to keep all our secrets," he said. "[But] I feel it's important at the end of the day to be true to the spirit of the character - a spider at the centre of the web of crime in London."
The showrunner also teased the introduction of Sherlock Holmes's father, describing the paternal character as "an interesting shadowy figure".
Irish actor Andrew Scott played Moriarty in BBC drama Sherlock, which has been compared to Elementary.
CBS president Nina Tassler recently insisted that the two shows are nothing alike, saying: "[Sherlock is] a wonderful show [but] theirs is very different from ours. I think there's plenty of room for another Holmes in our world."
Elementary will premiere in the US on September 27 and will air on Sky Living in the UK.
