John Barrowman has revealed that he wants a regular role on Arrow.

The actor currently recurs on The CW superhero drama as the sinister Malcolm Merlyn and told the Los Angeles Times that he wants "to explore his world even more".

"I'd love to be a regular on the show just to continue the role," Barrowman said. "I love playing [Malcolm]."

The 45-year-old also insisted that a regular role on Arrow would not interfere with any potential involvement in the 50th anniversary of BBC sci-fi drama Doctor Who.

"[Series exec] Andrew [Kreisberg] has already said to me if they want me in the 50th anniversary, he will give me the time off from Arrow to do it," Barrowman insisted.

Arrow was picked up for a full first season by The CW in October following a solid run of impressive ratings.

"Once I found out the numbers were good, I immediately texted [star] Stephen [Amell] to say congratulations and job well done," Barrowman explained.

"Stephen was so excited, that he tweeted it before it was even announced. That gives you an idea of the feeling we have as the actors when it happens, we are happy about it and ecstatic that our story gets to be told."

The Arrow mid-season finale will air on Sky1 in the UK this Monday at 8pm. In the US, the series will return to The CW on January 16.
