Drea de Matteo will exit Desperate Housewives in May, creator Marc Cherry has confirmed.

Since her alter ego Angie Bolen arrived on Wisteria Lane last September, her family have been shrouded in mystery. However, recent episodes have suggested that the family are on the run and have been forced to change their names.

Cherry revealed that the arrival of John Barrowman's character - a new villain with a connection to the family - will play a pivotal part in Angie's demise.

He also stressed that de Matteo was only ever contracted for one season of the ABC series.

"Part of the deal when we hired Drea was she was only interested in doing one season," he told Entertainment Weekly. "She has a baby and is eager to get back to her life in New York."

He added that recent events will lead to "an explosive finale" and promised that "all the mysterious parts of her past will be revealed".

Desperate Housewives continues Sundays at 9pm on ABC in the US and Wednesdays at 10pm on Channel 4 in the UK.
