Teri Hatcher has claimed that Desperate Housewives is a 'unique genre' of television.

Speaking behind the scenes at the sixth season photoshoot, 44-year-old Hatcher - Susan Mayer on the ABC series - added that the success of the show is down to its mix of comedy and drama.

"Desperate Housewives is a very unique and special show in that blending of drama and comedy. It isn't an all-out comedy and it isn't the level of drama of, say, The Sopranos or something.

"In its special way - that I'm proud of - Marc Cherry has created a kind of unique genre and I think it gives the fans something to look forward to and be surprised by every week. Some episodes lean a little more comedic; some lean a little more dramatic, and I think that's what makes it fresh and fun - that you don't really know what you're gonna expect."

She concluded: "It's gonna be something new every week."

Desperate Housewives returns for its sixth season Sunday, September 27 on ABC.
