Sorkin's latest series has received mixed reviews from critics, but legendary former CBS newsman Rather praised the realism of the show in a Gawker article.
The legendary newsman wrote in his review: "Sure, I've got my nits to pick with it; and, no, it's not perfect. But there's a lot to like in what Sorkin and his cast have done here.
"There is a newsroom authenticity to what's presented and much that gets to the heart of modern American journalism's problems."
Rather acknowledged that The Newsroom is "a bit too preachy here and there", but suggested those reviewers disappointed with the show largely missed the point.
"[T]hey've somehow missed the breadth, depth and 'got it right' qualities - and importance - of Newsroom... From where I sit and based on my experience, Sorkin and crew have got it amazingly right, even when they over-talk it," he noted.
Sorkin previously commented that he intended The Newsroom to have fun with the "cynicism" of modern journalism.
The Newsroom airs Sundays on HBO and will air in the UK from July 10 on Sky Atlantic.
