Speaking on the TV Squad podcast, Carter Bays admitted that the format of the comedy sometimes frustrates him.
"I hate the gimmick of the show and I love it at the same time," he said. "I definitely enjoy [the show's ambitious side], but it does get in the way of just telling a simple little story."
Bays added that it may become important to make the mother one of the show's main characters.
"I don't feel like anyone's not keen on [the idea]," he said. "I don't feel we need to do that yet, necessarily. We try to leave as many options open to ourselves as we can, in that regard. I don't think we're there yet, but that could be a possibility, especially as we get into later seasons of the show."
