It was confirmed last week that Three Amigos star Short will play the new boss of Marshall (Jason Segel) in the sitcom's seventh season.
"You'll see Marshall get settled into work in a really funny way," Bays told Entertainment Weekly. "We knew that we wanted him to have a funny boss. Martin Short and Jason Segel in a work environment felt like a perfect combination."
The producer confirmed that Short stepped into the role after Dave Foley, who played Marshall's boss in the sixth season finale, dropped out due to his commitment to new CBS comedy How To Be A Gentleman.
"[We wanted Foley] for a recurring gig on the show," he said. "[But] we traded one Canadian comedy legend for another."
Bays also admitted that it was Martin Short's dramatic role in the third season of Damages that convinced him to hire the star.
"We all love Martin Short as a comedy legend, but [his performance on] Damages is what sold me to have him on our show," he revealed. "[His character] is going to be funny, but there is going to be some more serious stuff, too."
He added: "We deal with the full spectrum of human emotion on our show. And Martin Short is such a diverse talent."
How I Met Your Mother was renewed for two more seasons in March. The show's seventh run will air on Mondays at 8/7c in the fall on CBS.
