'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series to feature new characters

By
Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. television series will revolve around brand new characters.

The Avengers helmer feels it is important for the superhero movie spinoff to be standalone, while maintaining ties with Marvel Studios' cinematic universe.

"It's new characters. It needs to be its own thing," Whedon told MTV News. "It needs to be adjacent you don't want to do a show where you're constantly going, 'Iron Man just left, but he was totally here a minute ago.'

"You want them to go off on their own thing and say, 'Well, what has S.H.I.E.L.D. got that the other heroes don't have?'"

He added: "Part of that, to me, is that they're not superheroes, but they live in that universe. That makes them a little bit - even though they're a big organisation - underdogs, and that's interesting to me."

The filmmaker also confirmed that a "full framework" and "full cast" are in place for the ABC show, but remained tight-lipped about who will be starring in the project.

Production on S.H.I.E.L.D. is about to commence, but an air date is yet to be announced.
