HBO is said to be working out a new deal with executive producer Jenni Konner, who works alongside Dunham on the show.

If Konner agrees a new deal, the Girls writing staff are expecting to follow suit and sign new contracts for a third season.

In a statement, HBO said: "We're looking forward to the launch of season two and hope to have good news shortly thereafter."

Patrick Wilson (A Gifted Man), Shiri Appleby (Life Unexpected) and Donald Glover (Community) are among the stars to have signed up for roles in season two of Girls.

Sky Atlantic airs the series in the UK.
