The actor, who played Dr George O'Malley on the hit ABC medical series, left the show in June amid speculation that he had asked to be written out.
The 36-year-old said that his decision to leave the show was because producers drastically diminished his screen time last season, says the New York Daily News.
"It didn't seem like an ebb to me," he said. "No other series regular's character had ever disappeared like mine did this past season.
"There just comes a time when it's so clear that moving on is the best decision."
Knight also explained that he and series creator Shonda Rhimes experienced a "breakdown in communication".
He added: "My five-year experience proved to me that I could not trust any answer that was given."
It was recently reported that Knight will star in the musical Parade, which opens on October 4 in Los Angeles.
