Patrick Dempsey as Derek Shepherd
Patrick Dempsey has admitted that he is not sure what the next season of Grey's Anatomy holds for him.

In the show's sixth season finale, Dempsey's character Derek was shot by the gunman who was roaming Seattle Grace hospital.

Derek survived after Christina (Sandra Oh) operated on him but Dempsey has now explained that he doesn't know how if he will recover.

"Hopefully I'm not in a coma for all of next year," he told Entertainment Tonight. "I hope I don't become Denny Duquette [Jeffrey Dean Morgan], where I come back as a ghost."

Dempsey also revealed that he does not want Derek to continue as Chief Of Surgery, a role he was given after Richard (James Pickens Jr.) started drinking again.

He explained: "I think Derek should go back to just being a surgeon and not be the head of the hospital."

Grey's Anatomy will return for its seventh season in the US later this year.
