The episode opens with Derek showing Meredith plans for their house and asking what she thinks about the bathroom layout. However, Meredith doesn't appear to care and, when Derek leaves, admits to Alex that she is having trouble seeing unless she squints. She suggests that it is because of her fertility drugs. Alex advises her to speak to Lucy, but Meredith says he is just looking for reasons to speak to her.

At the hospital, Meredith goes to see a new clinical trial patient, Alison. As she asks her some questions, Alison struggles to remember some of the details. Her partner tries to help, but her son Kyle is able to provide all of the answers - including side effects of her medication. Later, Meredith comes to take some more blood from Alison and notices that Kyle has a lump on his neck. Alison and her husband admit that they haven't had time to get it checked out because of Alison's Alzheimer's, and Meredith promises to get someone to take a look at it while they are there. April agrees to check Kyle's neck.

Later, Meredith calls in Alex and asks him to check out her eyes. She insists that she can see properly if she squints, but Alex tells her that her sight isn't very good at all and wonders if she can see enough to operate. He goes to see Lucy, explaining that his friend can't see and thinks it is because of her fertility drugs. Lucy believes that he is just making up an excuse to talk to her after she rejected him when he asked her out before. Alex eventually asks her out again, but she turns him down once more.

April shows Meredith and Arizona the scans of Kyle's cyst. Although it is benign, it is closing off his trachea and they decide they need to operate. Dr Stark arrives and Arizona asks him to do one of her surgeries so that she can operate on Kyle. Stark is shocked that the cyst has gotten to this stage and asks why no-one caught it sooner. When he discovers that Kyle's parents have been struggling because of Alison's Alzheimer's, he tells them to call protective services. April, Meredith and Arizona are shocked and try to reason with Stark, but he says Kyle's parents haven't been caring for him. Later, Meredith insists that they have to try to call Stark off. Arizona suggests that they call in a social worker to placate him, but Meredith warns that it is worse once the parents are in the system. She points out that if Alison's treatment doesn't work, she might only have a couple of years with Kyle left. April decides to talk to Stark and goes to find him with Arizona. She says it is not right to tear the family apart but Stark says that would only happen if Kyle was in danger. He tells Arizona to make the call.

Meredith and April go to see Alison and explain that they will remove Kyle's cyst. Meredith explains that a social worker might pop in and Alison and her partner soon realise that they don't think they are taking care of Kyle properly. Alison soon gets worked up and starts frantically trying to leave, but Kyle manages to calm her down by singing to her. Later, Alison is taken into surgery and Meredith is thrilled when she discovers Alison has been selected to receive the drugs. However, she can't see enough to operate. Derek takes her to get her sight checked out and is furious that she didn't say anything. Lucy arrives and explains that Meredith will have to stop taking the fertility drugs, explaining that she could risk permanent damage to her eyesight if she keeps taking them. Meredith worries that she will never be able to operate again, and is shocked when Webber arrives to tell her that she is not allowed in an OR until her eyes clear up. He adds that she is not even allowed to observe.

Grey's Anatomy S07E16 'Not Responsible': April Kepner
Meanwhile, April goes to see Stark and asks him once again not to call protective services. She explains that Alison will have to come back every two weeks for check-ups because of the clinical trial and explains that Kyle could come with her. She is surprised when Stark agrees to the plan. Later, Stark approaches April and asks her out on a date. He explains that he wants to go out with her because she changed his mind, and no-one has managed that in ten years. He promises that if she turns him down they will still be able to work together.

Grey's Anatomy S07E16 'Not Responsible': Callie Torres
Elsewhere in the episode, Mark and Arizona argue over whether Callie should have an amniocentesis - Mark is against the idea while Arizona is in favour of it. Lexie is impressed when she hears Mark say that he would be happy to look after a child with special needs, and Jackson sees her looking at him. Eventually, Callie announces that she will decide whether or not to have the test. Mark agrees, but angrily insists that he is the child's father and his thoughts should be given a fair hearing. Later, Callie reveals that she has decided to have the test and Mark takes the decision very maturely, explaining that he just wanted her to think about it and take his thoughts into consideration. At home, Callie praises Mark's reaction but Arizona is short with her. Eventually, Arizona admits that she is not happy about spending the rest of her life with Mark, always making decisions and spending Christmas morning with him. She asks Callie to remember that this was never her dream scenario.

Meanwhile, Teddy goes to see Ricky, a patient with cystic fibrosis who is getting a lung transplant. She meets his girlfriend Julia and explains that they will just do a final work-up before the surgery. Later, Lexie and Jackson go to check up on him but when Julia drops her bag, Lexie spots that she is taking medication for cystic fibrosis as well. Jackson and Lexie insist that Julia and Ricky can't see each other because they could infect each other and it is too dangerous. However, the couple explain that a life without risk is better than not living and reveal that other people don't understand their illness. Teddy is furious when she finds out that Julia has cystic fibrosis too and says she doesn't want Ricky to squander the lungs, which are a gift. Ricky replies that their love is a gift as well, but Teddy says if he doesn't end the relationship, he won't get the lungs. Later, Ricky tells Teddy that he has decided to end the romance and says goodbye to Julia, who runs out crying.

Ricky is taken into surgery and Teddy admits that she knows he was lying. She explains that the couple will lay low for a couple of weeks and then get back together. However, she says it is too late to stop the transplant. When she heads into the OR, Lexie admits that they could be soulmates. She confesses that she is thinking about Mark, adding that after seeing him speak about raising a child with special needs, she's wondering whether she made the right decision to leave him. Jackson points out that he is having a baby with another woman. They go into surgery and Lexie sees that Ricky's new lungs are "beautiful". Afterwards, she goes outside and finds Julia, who is sitting on a bench. She explains that Julia will have to break up with Ricky because at the moment they are killing each other, and it's not romantic. She promises that Julia will find someone else. Lexie returns to the hospital and tells Jackson that she is nervous about telling Ricky that Julia has gone. However, Jackson says if he had to hear something like that, he'd want it to be from Lexie.

That night, Jackson finds Lexie in the car park to make sure she is alright. She worries that Ricky and Julia were soulmates, but Jackson says there's no such thing. He adds that there will be a huge line of people waiting to date Lexie. She jokingly asks if he would be in the line and he replies: "Yeah, I'm in the line." Lexie smiles. Later, April returns home and rushes to find Lexie, who is in the shower. She reveals that Stark asked her out and she said yes. Lexie tells her to leave, and when she has gone, it emerges that Jackson is in the shower with Lexie.

Meanwhile, Cristina tells Owen that she is grateful he's not trying to get her pregnant after she saw the problems Meredith and Callie are facing. She explains that she is happy that they won't have to deal with that, but Owen uncomfortably mumbles: "Yeah" and rushes off. Cristina finds him to ask what's going on and Owen admits that he thought they would revisit the children conversation at some point, adding that he thought she might change her mind about not wanting to have a family. He explains that Cristina is at the point in her life when her career is the most important thing but that could change. Cristina insists that she's grown up and doesn't come around, before storming off. Later, the pair begin to discuss the subject again but continue to argue. Cristina suggests that they might have gotten married too hastily but Owen tells her not to threaten to walk out just because he has a different opinion to her. He asks her to at least pretend that she cares about what he wants.

Grey's Anatomy S07E16 'Not Responsible': Owen Hunt, Richard Webber and Mark Sloan
Elsewhere in the episode, Webber is surprised when Adele is brought into the ER again. She explains that she tripped in the cereal aisle at the supermarket but insists that she is absolutely fine. However, Webber tells her to stay and asks Bailey to carry out a number of tests on her. Bailey discovers that there is nothing wrong with Adele's balance but becomes suspicious when Adele claims she fell in the pharmacy, rather than the supermarket. She decides to check whether Adele is involved in substance abuse because she is having accidents and her reports of the accidents are inconsistent. However, the tests come back clear and Bailey goes to see Meredith. Meredith admits that when Adele came in before, she thought she might have signs of early dementia.

Bailey goes to see Webber and reveals that Adele's tests were clear. However, she adds that something is wrong. She explains that if it was her wife who was suddenly accident prone and losing track of details, she would ask a neurological surgeon who is studying neurological diseases like Alzheimer's to check her over. Later, Mark, Derek and Owen are playing golf on the roof and complaining about the women in their lives. Webber appears and pulls Derek aside, asking him to take a look at Adele.
