Later, Cristina tells Callie that she's treating her because she has fallen out with Teddy and is giving her some space. Callie insists that she needs to see Sofia, but Cristina jokes that she looks like a chicken and should wait until she looks cuter. Suddenly, April rushes in to tell Callie that Sofia opened her eyes. However, Callie bursts into tears because she is missing everything. She points out that Sofia could die before she has even met her. Cristina goes to ask Stark if Callie can see Sofia but he refuses, because Callie could pass on an infection. Cristina is annoyed by his attitude towards her and asks Jackson for his help.
Meanwhile, Owen and Alex treat an abrasive old woman who is refusing to stop smoking despite having lung cancer. She is desperate to get out of the hospital and tries to negotiate with Owen over when she can leave. She asks for a wheelchair so that she can go outside and smoke. Later, Arizona looks at some X-rays of a young patient but tells Alex that he is in Africa and she can no longer fly over next week to treat him because of Callie and Sofia. She explains that she has tried to fly him over but there is too much red tape and it costs too much. She is upset because she promised to help. Later, Alex returns to the lung cancer patient - Gladys - who is still rude and abrasive. Outside, Owen asks Alex what his plan to become chief resident is. Remembering his chat with Arizona, Alex claims that he wants to fly over sick children from Africa to treat them. Owen suggests that Alex just made that up on the spot but Alex insists he has been planning it.
Meanwhile, April is annoyed because Stark is refusing to talk to her. Meredith speaks to the Chief, but when he walks away he drops a post-it note. She picks it up and looks after him sadly. Later, she treats a new Alzheimer's trial patient but he dies on the table. Meredith returns the trial packet to the locked room but notices the nurse entering the code to get into the room. She returns to Derek and it emerges that their patient had a history of heart problems which had been kept secret to get him on the trial. Meredith suggests that Adele should be their next patient and shows Derek the post-it note, which reads: "This is Richard, Richard is your husband."
Later, several of the doctors wake up Callie in the middle of the night and secretly wheel her down the corridor to meet Sofia for the first time. Jackson distracts Bailey while Callie is wheeled past. They set her up in the room next to the intensive care unit and wheel Sofia up to the window. Callie promises her daughter that she is going to be just fine.
Time moves on, and Sofia is now five weeks old. Callie is frustrated about the lack of progress she is making in her physical therapy. She explains to Arizona that she is desperate to be able to hold Sofia, but cannot even hold a ball yet. Arizona goes to visit Sofia but discovers that she needs surgery immediately. Stark is planning to do the surgery and says that as Arizona is not technically related, she can stand in the OR with him. Arizona is grateful and rushes to tell Callie. Callie is pushing Cristina down the hall on a bed so that she can continue her therapy. When Arizona arrives, she tells all the doctors to leave and informs Callie that Sofia needs surgery. Callie is shocked - and soon it emerges that her stomach is bleeding. She faints and is rushed to surgery, where Bailey treats her. Mark observes and speaks to Arizona - who is in Sofia's surgery - on the phone. Callie is fine, but suddenly there are complications for Sofia. Mark rushes over to the OR and discovers Arizona bending over outside, saying she is sorry. He rushes in and comes back to get Arizona. When she goes into the OR, she discovers that Stark managed to save Sofia and she is fine.
Alex explains his plan for the African children to Stark, but is unprepared and Stark is unable to offer him any funding. He says Alex is not the sort of person who can pull this off. Alex returns to Gladys, who is now very ill. She threatens to sue him, saying she would die richer. Alex suggests that she could use her money for a better cause and reveals that he needs $100,000 for his plan to treat African children. Gladys is furious he is asking for money and tells him to leave. When Lexie hears about what he has done, she warns he is breaking ethical rules and could be fired. However, Alex is persistent and begins showing Gladys photos of the children who need help. She tells him to get out once more and says she doesn't want him treating her anymore. However, she is unimpressed with his replacement - Lexie - and later asks for him to help roll her over. Alex refuses to do so until she donates $100,000. Gladys eventually agrees. Alex is thrilled but, later, receives a page - Gladys has died. He is devastated as he had just got her to agree to give him the money.
Meanwhile, Meredith informs Derek that Adele's score on the Alzheimer's test is much lower than before so she is declining fast. Derek agrees to put her in the trial but Meredith wants to give her the medicine secretly on the side. However, Derek refuses because it would jeopardise the trial and their careers. Later, Meredith meets Adele waiting for Chief Webber in the waiting room. They begin to chat but it soon emerges that Adele thinks Meredith is actually her mother, Ellis. She anxiously tells Ellis to stop dating Richard and give him back. Meredith explains that she is not Ellis but eventually plays along, saying Adele can have Richard.
Time again moves on and Sofia is now 12 weeks old. Callie goes to see her and picks her up. Bailey arrives and reveals that Callie is now well enough to go home. However, later Callie reveals that she doesn't want to leave until Sofia can go home as well. Stark, though, tells her that Sofia can go home as long as she can sit in an infant carrier for an hour. Arizona is thrilled and kisses Stark on the cheek. Stark walks to the side, where April tells him that she is glad people have started saying nice things about him and got to know the Robert she got to know. However, Stark just tells her: "It's Dr. Stark." Later, Sofia manages to pass the infant carrier test, but Callie announces that her daughter's not ready to leave. She frantically says that it's not safe for her to get in a car, pointing out that the last time Sofia was in a car she almost died. Bailey comforts her and tells her that she's not nervous because she was in an accident - she's nervous because she is now a parent. She jokes that some of the anxiety will pass, but some never will. Callie ends up leaving the hospital, smiling, with Sofia, Arizona and Mark.
Meanwhile, Teddy gets into the habit of going to see Henry after her horrible dates. One night, Henry sets up a romantic meal for her but when she arrives, she reveals that her date is going well and she just wanted to come by and give him some pasta that he likes. When she has gone, Henry appears crushed. Downstairs, Teddy gets into a car with her date - Andrew.
Elsewhere, Webber says goodbye to Adele, who is going to prepare for the Alzheimer's trial. Webber thanks Meredith for everything she has done, including noticing that Adele had Alzheimer's in the first place. He explains that he has made mistakes but Meredith has given him and Adele the best chance they could get. Desperate to make sure that Adele is treated, Meredith goes to find the trial envelopes. Using an X-ray machine, she holds Adele's envelope up to the light and discovers that she is getting a placebo. She checks the next one and finds it is an "active agent" envelope. She switches them so that Adele will definitely get the medicine. Sure enough, in the operation, Derek is told to give Adele the active agent. Later, he tells Meredith that he would love to tell Webber, and Meredith agrees but seems uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, Alex hands the other doctors the information about the African patients they will each be treating, as the children are arriving that day. Arizona hugs him and thanks him for managing to get the plan into action. However, when she leaves Alex is sick into a bin and tells Lexie he is in trouble. It emerges that he is in debt - he has maxed out his credit cards and couldn't cancel the plan for a lack of funds. Lexie worries that he could go to jail for fraud as he has tricked people, but Alex rushes off. Later, Lexie finds a letter from a lawyer and rushes to find Alex. In desperation he threatens to tear it up but Lexie manages to stop him just in time - it is actually a cheque for $200,000 from Gladys' lawyers as she managed to donate the money after all. Alex is thrilled, and the episode ends with the children arriving at the hospital.
