Recap - 'Grey's Anatomy': 'Unaccompanied Minor'

The episode opens with Derek and Meredith visiting the building site of their house. Derek is planning out where the changing table and crib will go, but Meredith worries that he will jinx the adoption. Their social worker Janet arrives to see the site, but appears unimpressed that it is not yet finished.

At the hospital, Teddy goes to see Henry before flying to Germany with Andrew. Henry admits that he will miss her and mocks Andrew, saying he has a right to be annoyed that his wife is leaving. Teddy points out that she's not his real wife, but he says she's his real best friend. He tells her not to be sorry and says she should go and be happy with Andrew. The pair hug. Meanwhile, Derek and Meredith prepare for more trial patients. Meredith is upset that one of their Alzheimer's patients has young children, but when Derek says he can take over, she asks him to treat her like a colleague, not his wife. She goes to see the patient and Owen arrives, asking to speak to Derek about the trial - without Meredith. Later, Derek asks Meredith to tell him exactly what she did but she refuses, saying it will just make things worse. In frustration, Derek says that if she wants him to treat her like a colleague he will and informs Webber of the situation. Derek is furious with Meredith for invalidating the trial, telling her that the FDA will never touch the hospital again. Webber asks Meredith to deny the charges, but instead she just suggests that they kick her off the trial as nothing she did changes anything. Webber says he will have to investigate, but it looks like Meredith has lost her job. After leaving, Meredith storms past Alex and asks if he is happy now that she is probably going to be fired. She tells Alex to get his stuff out of the house by the end of the day. The other doctors are shocked and want to know what's going on, but suddenly they all get pages.

The doctors gather and learn that a plane has crashed into the sea. Seattle Grace is the designated crisis centre, where families will come to learn about their loved ones and any surviving patients will be brought. Owen starts organising their response and sending people off on jobs. Teddy rushes up to see Henry and tells him that his procedure will have been cancelled. She advises him what to do to make sure he is first in line when surgeries begin again and adds that she and Henry are not leaving until the plane crash is dealt with. Elsewhere, Mark complains that he has to work with Jackson, calling him an idiot for dropping out of Webber's trial. However, he is surprised when Owen tells him the truth - that Jackson was worried Webber wouldn't win the Harper Avery if he was involved. Meanwhile, Cristina goes to see Alex and tells him Meredith was the only one who cared about him. She warns that no-one would even give him a glass of water in a burning building now. Alex goes to see Owen and explains he was drunk when he told him about Meredith. He adds that he doesn't think she should be chief resident but didn't think she would be fired. Owen replies that if he didn't realise she would be, he is as dumb as Meredith. In the cafeteria, families start arriving and are desperate for news, even though there is none. Eli spots Bailey looking upset and she admits that she has taken the same flight a number of times with her son. She insists she's OK and doesn't have time to sit down, but Eli stays with her for a while. Elsewhere, Cristina starts interviewing a patient and asks if she could be pregnant. She has to prompt her to remember when she had her last period but as she talks, Cristina has a sudden realisation. She goes to see Lucy, who confirms that Cristina is about six weeks pregnant.

The doctors are still waiting around for the patients to arrive, as it takes a long time to get people out of the water and they will do triage at the waterfront. Arizona and Callie start trying to work out whether Alex or Meredith will be named chief resident, but Owen stays quiet. Webber finds Alex and tells him he needs a written account of everything he saw with regards to Meredith. Alex hesitates, but Webber says he doesn't care what he thinks. Meanwhile, Mark finds Jackson and says he is a good man - he can have Lexie. He promises to stay out of his way. Cristina arrives and pulls Owen into another room, where she reveals that she is pregnant. Owen is thrilled and says he knows it's complicated but this could be great. However, Cristina pushes his hands off her stomach and tells him that she is not going to go through with the pregnancy. Owen says they are a partnership and should think this through together. He says he doesn't want to make her miserable, but there might be a way to compromise. Cristina insists that she doesn't want a baby and, when Owen asks how far along she is, she accuses him of becoming "lifey". When he asks if the foetus has hands, she starts crying and tells him to stop. She says she has no problem with children, but thinks they should have parents who want them. Owen says he does, and he believes Cristina could too.

Webber, Derek and Meredith go to talk about the trial but Meredith refuses to say anything. She explains that the trial will only become invalid once she does as they still don't know what happened. She tells them again to fire her, but Derek yells that she doesn't get to decide who gets the drug and who gets the placebo. He adds that she screwed him and the hospital, saying he was trying to cure her disease. Alex arrives and hands Webber a file, and the Chief suddenly realises that Meredith ensured Adele got the drug. Derek asks what he's going to do, adding that the protocol is clear. Meredith is shocked that he is encouraging Webber to fire her, but Webber admits that he basically pressured Meredith to make sure Adele got the drug. He suspends her so it doesn't look bad and admits he will have to turn the trial over to the FDA. Derek walks out and Webber appears to be trying to thank Meredith, although he can't do it explicitly. Later, Meredith has to go and see the patient with young children to tell him that he probably won't be getting the treatment now. His wife is furious, yelling that they could treat her husband if they wanted to and shouting that her children's father is disappearing.

Some of the doctors are still waiting for patients from the crash to arrive. April suggests that she should do something, but Mark tells her that no-one's coming - if it's taken this long, no-one will have survived. Soon, Webber confirms the news and, with Andrew, explains that they will each have to inform some of the families that their loved ones have died. As they walk off, Owen pins up the chief resident announcement - it's April. April is thrilled but her smile fades when she sees Meredith and Alex. Alex storms after Owen and asks how he could make April the chief resident. Owen points out that Alex sold out the one person that was universally liked and no-one would ever trust him as their chief resident now. he adds that he had been planning to give it to Alex but couldn't after that. Meanwhile, Lexie is shocked when Jackson reveals that Mark gave them their blessing - or rather, he gave Lexie to him. The doctors begin to tell the families that their loved ones are dead, but Lexie and April soon realise that the relatives think it is good news when they are called to speak to the doctors.

Later, Owen goes to sit outside with Cristina and they continue to chat about Cristina's pregnancy. Owen says he could take leave to look after the baby and Cristina wouldn't have to worry about it. However, Cristina says that she's not a monster and would love a baby if she had it - she couldn't just ignore it. Owen finds it amusing that her big problem is that she would love her baby but Cristina accuses him of not listening to her. She says they can't compromise over this - you can't have half a baby. She says she just doesn't want to be a mother. Owen asks if she loves and trusts him and explains that he thinks she will be a great mother. Cristina asks why she would have this baby and Owen says because she loves him. Meanwhile, Teddy goes to see Henry and admits that she has had a tough time telling the families that their relatives have died in the crash. Henry says he has tried to be a gentleman but tells her to get out of his room. He shouts that the hardest and most painful thing he has had to do was letting her go and yells that he's in love with her. He says he's not her best friend or security blanket and asks her to leave him alone. Teddy walks out crying.

Meanwhile, April is shocked to learn that there is a survivor from the plane crash. It's a young girl who was flying alone - an unaccompanied minor. The doctors rush to take care of her and April goes to see if she has any family members in the cafeteria. The cafeteria is full of families in tears, contacting relatives to explain their loss. When one of the grieving mothers hears that a young girl has survived - and none of her family members are at the hospital yet - she decides that she will stay. She tearfully explains that she wouldn't have wanted her son to be alone. Her husband agrees and all of the other families stay as well. Lexie promises to let them know how the girl is doing.

Derek finds Meredith, who reveals that she didn't get fired and adds that he's probably disappointed. Derek points out that he's not the bad guy and yells that if Meredith had been thinking about all the people with Alzheimer's they could have helped she would never have done this. He says she doesn't know the difference between right and wrong, but Meredith believes things are more complicated than that. Derek tells her that he doesn't know how to raise a child with someone who doesn't know the difference between right and wrong. Meredith asks if he's saying she's a bad mother, and Derek points out that she's been saying that for weeks and maybe she's right. He says he needs some space and walks off. At that moment, Meredith reads a text from her social worker, saying they need to discuss the adoption. Later, Cristina tries to talk to Meredith but Meredith is preoccupied - the adoption lady is paging her and Derek's missing and not speaking to her. She explains that she was thinking about Adele when she tampered with the trial. Cristina continues to try to talk to Meredith, but Meredith is shocked to see Alex talking to the social worker, Janet. She goes over to interrupt but Alex insists he hasn't said anything bad. Janet announces that she's granting Meredith temporary custody of Zola until she's granted permanent custody. She says Alex has said Zola is doing well so Meredith can take her home today.

Andrew finds Teddy and explains that he still has to speak to some families, but just had to see her face. He says that when something like this happens you just want to be with someone you love. Teddy has a revelation and goes to see Henry again. He is annoyed that she is back, but eventually agrees to stand up. Teddy kisses him and says: "You're my husband and I think I'm falling in love with you." They kiss again. Meanwhile, the unaccompanied survivor's mother arrives, frantically looking for a doctor. The other families soon tell her that her daughter is in surgery and the grieving mother who decided to stay earlier explains that they thought the girl should have people pulling for her. The girl's mother Mrs Gordon is touched and thanks them. They talk, and after a while Mrs Gordon apologises for not asking if they had anyone on the plane. The other mother says she did - but claims that her son is in surgery and will be OK. Mrs Gordon is pleased and, before she goes to see her daughter, hugs her and says she will pray for her son. When she has gone, the grieving mother dissolves into tears as the families begin to leave.

Elsewhere, Mark approaches Lexie but she tells him he has to stop talking to her. She explains that she loves him and always will, but doesn't want to. She says she wants to be happy and Jackson makes her happy. She tells Mark that if he keeps pulling, she will end up coming back to him. Mark agrees and says he will let her go, telling her to walk away. Meanwhile, Jackson congratulates April on becoming chief resident but she soon becomes nervous when she realises that she is going to have to start bossing the others about. Lexie and Jackson smile at each other. Elsewhere, Eli asks to stay over at Bailey's house that night. She is hesitant as her son is there, but Eli says he wants this to be a relationship and needs to meet her son. Bailey agrees and they walk off hand in hand. At the bar, Lucy finds Alex and begs him to tell her not to go to Africa. However, instead he tells her to go to hell. Meanwhile, Meredith goes to see Zola and calls Derek, but he is still not picking up. The nurse at the paediatric ward hands her supplies and Meredith takes Zola home. She speaks to her as she shows her round the house, which is completely empty. Derek's not there, Lexie is out, and Meredith soon discovers that Alex has cleared his room. Meredith tells Zola that they are a team and will be OK, as they're both tough. However, she admits that she is glad Zola is there with her. She says they'll figure it out.

Cristina arrives home and, asking Owen to remember that he loves her, reveals that she has made an appointment to have an abortion. She says she needs to lie down as she feels unwell, but Owen is furious that she decided without him. Owen says he's made sacrifices and he wanted Cristina to consider doing something for him, but she yells that it's a baby - you don't "give a little" on a baby. Again, she refuses to go through with the pregnancy and Owen yells at her to leave as she shut him out of the decision. Cristina goes to stay at Meredith's house. Meredith reveals that Derek has gone and she has Zola upstairs. She is shocked to discover that Cristina is pregnant, having an abortion, and Owen kicked her out. Cristina explains that she didn't tell her because Meredith had a busy day. Zola starts crying and Meredith asks Cristina to come up and help her, but Cristina says she can't be around a baby and goes to lie down. The episode ends with Derek at the building site, looking at the marks setting out where the crib would go. He lies down with a sleeping bag.
