Grey's Anatomy star Kevin McKidd has revealed new details about his role in the upcoming eighth season.

The actor confirmed to TV Line that his character Dr Owen Hunt will be promoted to Chief of Surgery in a future episode.

"He's as surprised as anybody else about this," said McKidd. "And he's nervous about it. He's a man of action, really, and the head of trauma surgery. That's what he knows. Suddenly, he's in a more administrative position. I think the way he deals with that is going to be interesting."

He added that the loss of previous Chief of Surgery Dr Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr) will be addressed in the eighth season premiere.

"[Webber left] because of what's happening with Adele [and her Alzheimer's] and what happened with Meredith," he explained. "[But] he's made his peace with it."

McKidd also revealed that Owen's wife Dr Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) will initially struggle with her husband's new position.

"[She] will be excited for him, on one level, [but] there's so much more going on in Cristina and Owen's life that this, in a way, adds another layer of complication for them."

Grey's Anatomy will return to ABC on Thursday, September 22.
