"They've come up with a really creative send-off for Mark, especially for the die-hard Grey's fans," Wilson told TV Guide. "Eric gets the chance to do some really beautiful stuff in the first two episodes."

Wilson - who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey - will direct episodes of the show's ninth season, as will her co-star Kevin McKidd (Dr. Owen Hunt).

Chyler Leigh (Dr. Lexie Grey) and Kim Raver (Teddy Altman) also recently departed Grey's Anatomy, with series creator Shonda Rhimes refusing to rule out further cast departures.

"I think any number of people could be departing at this point," she said. "That's left open."

Grey's Anatomy returns to ABC in the US on Thursday, September 27 at 9/8c. The series airs on Sky Living in the UK.
