Classic Moments: Mahone saves Scofield (Prison Break)

The Context

Fierce rivals Michael Scofield and Alexander Mahone were both dumped in the dreaded Sona Prison at the start of Prison Break's third season. Scofield had been a good guy on the wrong side of the law, while Mahone had been the polar opposite. The pair were sworn enemies. Yet in times of desperation, crisis measures are needed.

Under commanding inmate Lechero's rule, Sona prisoners had to settle their disputes by giving their rival a chicken foot - which meant a fight to the death in the courtyard. When Scofield was wrongly accused by a paranoid prisoner of pinching his drugs, he soon found himself on the wrong end of a chicken foot.

The Moment

In front of the baying Sona inmates, Scofield proved that he could fight dirty and bossed the fight. Yet he lacked the killer instinct - literally. He simply couldn't murder his opponent in the ring, despite that being the only way to emerge from the fight intact. With his back turned, Scofield is unaware his battered adversary has been slipped a knife. But before Scofield is stabbed, Mahone jumps into the ring and uses all his expertise to disarm the man, snap his neck and kill him.

The Aftermath

As no weapons are permitted during any stage of the chicken foot process, Lechero was compelled to allow Scofield and Mahone to walk away. Yet their alliance was to prove an uneasy one, especially given the latter's fondness for flashbacks and drugs. It didn't help that Mahone was responsible for the murder of Scofield's dad either. They managed to escape Sona together though, but the third season finale hinted that Mahone may have been drawn back to the dark side again.
