In an interview with The Futon Critic, Olmstead hinted at a death and the return of a major character.
"We have a big surprise reveal, which I won't tell you who it is, but a returning character who comes in late in the game when the wheels are coming off everybody," he teased.
"He's either there to save the day or to hijack the whole thing for his or her own benefit. So the big reveal of a returning character - that pays off very nicely."
Olmstead also said that weighing up the fates of the characters was a tough decision.
"There were certain things that in terms of Michael's fate, Lincoln's fate, Sara's fate, all the characters' fates, we had tossed around as the show went along," he added. "Down the road I always wondered what's going to happen. What are the last images you want for the show?
"[The cancellation] was a bit of a luxury in the sense that we had the time to platform the ending as opposed to going on hiatus like some shows have to do, and wait to hear if you're going to come back or not."
Discussing Michael and Sara's romance and how the story might end for them, Olmstead admitted: "Ultimately, it's bittersweet but very satisfying."
