Note: The light summary of this article provides only gentle teasers as to what happens in this episode, and is suitable for reading before viewing. The full summary serves as a more detailed recap of the episode.
Light Summary: Dr. Sarah questions if she should leave a light on and the door open for Michael, who must betray the Pope in order to carry out his escape plan. Veronica finds evidence that points her to Montana, but realises that her closest ally may actually be her greatest enemy. Michael, Lincoln and the other inmates make a break for it, but after the alarm is sounded, find out who will make it over the wall, who will be left behind and who will leave the prison in a body bag?
Full Summary: After weeks of planning, interruptions, chaos and setbacks, will Michael and the other inmates manage to carry out the escape?
Warden Pope thought he and Michael had bonded, but that’s not how he feels when the
desperate inmate holds a knife up to his throat and announces that he’s breaking out. Michael forces the warden to get Lincoln transferred to the infirmary, before knocking Pope out and leaving him tied up in the cupboard. He tells Pope’s secretary that the warden is busy on a conference call, and leaves – guilt-ridden at betraying the man who had faith in him.
Michael returns to his cell, where Sucre’s nerves are starting to get the better of him. There’s only an hour until the next count, which means 60 nervewracking minutes to get over the wall and as far away from Fox River as possible. “If we get caught...” hyperventilates Sucre, “I can’t do ten more years, bro.” But, as Michael reminds him, there’s no going back now.
Everyone squeezes through the escape hole in Michael and Sucre’s cell during count, but they’re already ten minutes behind schedule. And there’s another problem awaiting them in the tunnel in the enraged form of Bellick, who is shouting for help. TBag soon quiets the angry guard, enabling Michael to take his jacket and cap before leaving Bellick tied up and continuing down the tunnel.
Disguised as a guard, Michael heads off while the others nervously put on their bleached
uniforms and get ready to pose as psych ward inmates. Soon they are shuffling into the ward with the other psych ward residents, and are half-way along the escape route, but Westmoreland, who seriously injured himself dealing with the Bellick situation, is flagging badly.
The gang reach the infirmary, where they are joined by Lincoln, and start working on loosening the window. While they do so, an unexpected guest to make an appearance: Haywire, who’s been following them since the psych ward. They are forced to let him join them, and one by one begin inching their way along the cable which leads to the boundary wall. But how many will get across before Pope is found the alarm raised?
The season finalé, 'Flight', airs straight after this episode.
