Jones joined the show this season as new football instructor Coach Beiste.
Speaking to Jay Leno, she explained that she signed up for the series after bumping into executive producer Brad Falchuk in a supermarket.
"I'd worked with him and Ryan [Murphy] on Nip/Tuck and a pilot I did [called] Pretty Handsome," she said. "And I asked him, 'What are you doing?' and he said, 'Well I'm working with Ryan on Glee'. And I was like, 'Goshdammit, I love that show - I want a job! I want to be on there, tell Ryan, you guys write me something'."
Jones said that she was "kind of kidding", but that two months later her agent called her to reveal that Murphy wanted her on the show.
The actress also revealed that she has heard she will sing on the programme and admitted that she felt emotional on her first day.
"This is Glee, this is like the hottest show in the country," she said. "[I thought,] 'They want me to do this show for them?' And I almost started crying."
Glee continues on Tuesdays at 8/7c on Fox.
