Meanwhile, Figgins calls Sue and Will into his office and reveals that the band he picked for prom has cancelled. He asks Will to make New Directions provide the entertainment, but Will is reluctant as they have Nationals shortly. However, Figgins offers to pay them $400 to help them on the way to Nationals. Sue refuses to allow it as she is prom co-ordinator. She worries that her punch is spiked every year and claims that New Directions' performances will just encourage it. However, Figgins announces that he has made his decision.
Elsewhere, Kurt asks Blaine to go to the prom with him. However, Blaine is reluctant. He explains that at his old school, he went to a dance just after he had come out with a gay friend. At the end of the night, the pair were both beaten up. Kurt explains that Blaine could get closure by facing up to bullies, but says that if he is uncomfortable they won't go. However, Blaine agrees to be Kurt's date. Later, Kurt goes to offer fashion advice for some of the girls choosing prom dresses. He reveals that he is going to the prom with Blaine and Santana pulls him aside, offering him protection from the Bully Whips. She explains that it will get her a lot of votes for Prom Queen. Meanwhile, Artie is sad when he looks at a photograph of Brittany in his locker. Puck arrives and reveals that he wants to be made the "anti-prom king", explaining that he will never get his street cred back if he wins the conventional crown with Lauren. He explains that he needs to spike the punch but is the main suspect and asks Artie to do it for him while he distracts Sue. However, Artie isn't sure that it will get Brittany to forgive him.
Meanwhile, Rachel goes to practise 'Rolling In The Deep' in the auditorium as she is thinking about performing it at prom. However, she is surprised when Jesse arrives and they duet angrily. Afterwards, Jesse reveals that he has dropped out and apologises for treating her badly before. He asks what she is doing for prom. Later, Finn confronts Rachel, explaining that she heard Jesse will be her date. Rachel admits that he is joining her, Mercedes and Sam but points out that Finn can't tell her what to do as he broke up with her. Finn admits that he doesn't trust Jesse and bursts out that he doesn't even want to go to prom as in Quinn's eyes he will get everything - including the corsage - wrong. Rachel gives him advice on which corsage to pick and tries not to cry as she walks away.
Over at the Hummel house, Kurt shows off his outfit for prom - a kilted tux. Finn likes it as it reminds him of a "gay Braveheart", but Burt admits that he thinks Kurt is just trying to stir the pot. Blaine agrees, explaining that he doesn't want to give anyone an extra reason to cause trouble. Burt explains that he wants Kurt to be himself, but also to be practical. Kurt says he understands why Blaine is worried, but says he worked hard on the outfit and will be wearing it to prom. At school, Santana and Karofsky accompany Kurt along the corridors so he is safe. At one point, Karofsky takes Kurt to French, but Kurt points out that no-one has said anything mean to him lately. He suggests that perhaps people are ready to deal with the fact that he is gay, even if they're not willing to embrace it. He adds that he knows how miserable Karofsky is and says he doesn't have to torture himself. He suggests that in the future a moment could arise when he can come out. Karofsky begins to cry and says he is "so freaking sorry" for his treatment of Kurt. Kurt accepts his apology.
It's prom day, and Finn arrives to pick up Quinn. When she comes downstairs, he is impressed with her look. Meanwhile, she is thrilled with the corsage he picked out. Over at Breadsticks, Sam, Mercedes, Rachel and Jesse gather for their pre-prom meal. There is an awkward moment when Jesse refers to Sam's financial problems, but the conversation soon moves on as Jesse reveals that he wants to open a dance studio to help show choirs. Mercedes is unimpressed and does not think it is a viable business, but Rachel appears completely taken in by Jesse. Quinn and Finn arrive, and Finn and Jesse end up making sharp comments to each other. However, Mercedes says they are ruining the vibe and Finn leaves with Quinn.
Back at the dance, Blaine, Brittany and Tina perform 'I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You'. However, Finn is annoyed when he sees Jesse dancing sexily with Rachel and goes over to confront him. Eventually, they end up fighting. Becky goes to inform Sue, who arrives and kicks them both out. Quinn is devastated as she is running for prom queen alongside Finn. Soon it is time for the prom king and queen announcement. Karofsky is installed as prom king, but there is silence when Figgins reads out that Kurt has won prom queen. As some people start a slow clap, Kurt runs out of the room in tears as Blaine follows. In the corridor, Blaine tries to reassure Kurt. However, Kurt says he was stupid to believe that there had been some kind of progress - everyone was just too afraid to be homophobic out loud. He refuses to go back in. He's not the only one to be upset - Santana is sad that she failed to win prom queen and says she is going to have a whole life as an outsider. She tells Brittany she just wanted one night where she was accepted and decides to run off to live in a lesbian colony. Meanwhile, in the bathroom Quinn yells at Rachel that this was all her fault - people would never vote for her and Finn as they know Finn wants to be with her. She slaps Rachel, but apologises. She adds that she will transfer schools soon.
Blaine asks Kurt if he wants to leave, but Kurt refuses as he does not want to have a lump in his throat like Blaine does about his old dance. He decides that he will go back in to accept his crown, saying that it will show that people can't touch him and Blaine or what they have. Meanwhile, Rachel jokes that she appreciated the drama of Quinn slapping her and Quinn explains that she is terrified all the time of the future when her looks have gone. Rachel reassures her that she is a lot more than a pretty girl, and helps her fix her makeup. At the same time, Santana decides that people must have avoided voting for her because they figured out she is a lesbian. Brittany says that they don't know that - but do know that Santana is hiding something and would have voted for her if she was herself. She says she believes in Santana. She adds that this is worse for Kurt and advises Santana to go back and support him.
Sue is satisfied that she has kept Artie from his prom, but complains that he is no fun to intimidate or torture when she realises that Artie only spiked the punch with lemonade. He explains that he wanted to impress Brittany, but didn't want everyone to be drunk. Sue allows him to rejoin the dance. Kurt gets up on stage and accepts his crown. He says: "Eat your heart out, Kate Middleton" and the crowd begin to clap and cheer. Figgins announces that it is time for the prom king and prom queen to have the first dance, and Kurt whispers to Karofsky that this is a great moment for him to come out and make a difference. However, Karofsky says that he can't do it and rushes off. Kurt is disappointed, but Blaine asks to dance with him and they do. The episode ends with New Directions having fun at the prom and getting their photos taken - including Brittany and Artie together and Quinn alone.
