Prom is upon us, and we're reminded that Brittany is the class president. As president, she has to choose a prom theme, opting for dinosaurs. Because she's Brittany. Her reason: "The Bible told me that cavemen and dinosaurs lived side-by-side for millions of years in peace, and I think that's something we should totally celebrate."
This is all basically a set-up so Brittany can sing 'Dinosaur' by Ke$ha - but it was a surprisingly bland performance where the dancers were wearing dinosaur heads.
Rachel continues to be fantastic, though. The show often tries too hard with her, to the extent of ruining the character, but the storyline with her choking at the NYADA audition mostly worked. I don't have any doubts that she'll get on Broadway someday, but I'm enjoying the refocusing this gives her. Still shaken and not terribly confident, Rachel decides to host an anti-prom.
The anti-prom is an idea that Glee really could have pulled off. It's literally a celebration of the underdog. Isn't that what the show is all about? Sadly, they didn't bother. Instead, Rachel rented a motel room and she, Puck, Becky, Kurt and Blaine hung out being remorseful.
Meanwhile, Quinn's mobility is swiftly healing, and she's running for prom queen, paired with Finn.
This year has spent a lot of time emphasising how far these characters have come and who they are. While Quinn's longing to be liked is the one consistent part of her, having her go from punk-rock to wanting her baby back to paraplegic hasn't helped reinforce that.
I thought the show might actually consider keeping her in a wheelchair, but it appears that it's turned into another pointless arc. Quinn will keep looking sad while making bizarre, life-altering changes. Changes that won't ever affect anything. Dianna Agron deserves better.
Back at the motel, the anti-prom is decidedly a failure and the characters make their way back to Brittany's real thing (I have to say, Brit put together one hell of a party!). Last year, when the characters performed 'Friday', it was hilarious. This year, they take on One Direction's 'What Makes You Beautiful' - a decent cover.
Finn is named prom king, while Rachel is (unexpectedly) prom queen. Then Quinn slowly stands up while singing 'Take My Breath Away'. It may not have a crying Kurt Hummel to fall back on, but it was a fun hour all the same. Glee is successful at proms.
