In the season five finale, viewers saw Hugh Laurie's character Gregory House admit himself to a psychiatric hospital after experiencing a series of hallucinations.
Speaking at this year's Paley Centre For Media, David Shore said that the movie-like season premiere will follow House as he resides in the mental institution.
"Katie [Jacobs, producer] is going to be directing a two-hour season premiere, which is basically a movie which basically follows House through that institution," said Shore. "And it takes place over a much longer period of time than we're used to. And [it's about] his life in there, his search for getting better."
He added: "We just want to keep exploring this character... we're just seeing where his life progresses and where it goes. And the end of last year obviously we did something that felt natural and real to me but is very extreme and we want to be as true to that as we can and follow up on that."
Laurie also revealed that the season opener will feature only House and Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard), a move he described as "bold".
"We are moving into our sixth year and I suppose the writers felt that we couldn't just reprise the same stories, the same sets, the same look, the same problems," he said. "We needed to go on an adventure, and this is it."
Fox recently announced that season six of House will premiere on Monday, September 21.
