Is 'True Blood' off to a fangtastic start?
The world is crying out for a cracking new cult series to fill the void left by the end of Battlestar Galactica and the absence of Doctor Who in 2010. Step forward HBO's vampire series True Blood. Already on its second season Stateside, this blood-sucking new show is well worth sinking your fangs into if the pilot episode is anything to go by...

Originating from the mind of Six Feet Under creator and American Beauty writer Alan Ball, True Blood wastes no time in immersing us in an earthbound reality that's significantly different to our own. For vampires are now commonplace, but not accepted within society by its less undead members. They're treated as second-class citizens, with suspicion, despite the advent of a new synthetic blood that should curtail their cravings for the real juice.

This is one of the show's main strengths - we feel for the plight of the vampires while never really trusting them. There is no clearcut equation of humans = good and vampires = evil, with the pilot episode aptly demonstrating that blurred, ambiguous line. The tone is set by the behaviour of the vampire in the off-licence during the pre-credits sequence, as he threatens the youngsters and store owner who mock his kind, yet doesn't take any physical action and continues on his melancholic way.

Aside from the intriguing environment, complemented by the bawdy title sequence, the central relationship between empathetic waitress Sookie and miserable vamp Bill is key to the show's success. Anna Paquin is great as the mind-reading Sookie, basically a spin on the Matt Parkman character from Heroes, and brings out the internal pain she suffers as a result of her ability. Before he even says a word, Stephen Moyer is mesmerising with that contradictory expression on his pale face that makes you want to mother him yet fear him at the same time. Together, the pair share an electrifying scene at a table in the diner where all the eyes are on them, breaking down social barriers and transfixed with each other.

Supernatural goings-on in a close knit rural community echo the brilliant Twin Peaks, although True Blood appears to lack the appealing and unique supporting characters of David Lynch's series. It's still early days, but Sookie's sardonic mate Tara, with a racial chip on her shoulder, soon began to grate. Both the diner's owner and its pussy-fearing chef fared little better too. Hopefully their characters will be better fleshed out in future episodes.

For those who have seen the opening instalment of True Blood and are unsure of whether to commit or not, it's well worth checking out the first ten minutes of the second episode. For that's when the viewer can really sink their incisors into the meat of the story, which contains a superb twist in the murder case involving Sookie's brother Jason and some very surprising blood-related antics by Bill. It's well worth fanging around for...

Having watched every episode up until season 2 episode 6,i think it's one of my fav programme's ever made!! it has every single genre.it's funny,it's horrific,it's sad!!this is the kind of tv i've been waiting for.you'd be mad to miss it.beat's buffy hand's down.Tara is a wicked caracter.her attitude is purely hilarious but don't judge her.she's had it hard and id have a chip on my shoulder if i had a mother as terrible as her's.for those who are unsure, stick with it.you won't be disappointed :)

i agree the tara character and her storyline were unwnated and not needed, and the jason stroyline gets a bit boring in eps 7,8,9 but still a good show.

I don't like it when screen adaptations are always compared to the books they came from. They're allowed to be different...or what would be the point of adapting it?! I'm on series 2, and book 1, and love both. Series 1 really gets going after a couple of episodes and keeps on getting better; totally hooked! I heart Sam.

Tara doesn't appear in the original book "Dead Until Dark" and the story is a whole lot better for it. I have seen all 12 episodes already and believe me, there is no room in this series for the stupid voodoo / drunken mother sub-plot that happen in later episodes. Sam's sex with Tara does not ring true - he has passions elsewhere and the reasons are revealed in the last 20 pages of the said book. I think the series as televised is great but would have been a whole lot better without bolting on Tara as she brings nothing at all to the plot. Jason's sex scenes are never described and the whole kidnapping of the vampire for "V" by blood draining is entirely a product of the tv series. The Jason in the book(s) would never have done that.

True Blood (as I've seen many episodes) will grow on you. Very impressive to say the least, 'but' you must follow it from Season 1 Episode 1 to appreciate how well it flows on. The occasional 'special effects' are faultless and the end of each episode will have you wanting more. Michael

erm, what channel is this on? Hopefully not one you have to pay extra for (e.g. Sky1)

Tru Blood First season has just finished here in South Africa - KEEP WATCHING IT!! It's excellent, takes a while to get to know all the characters but I cant wait for Season 2 you kids are in for a treat! I can't rave about it enough, keep Twilight for the little ones and Tru Blood is definitely for adults only!!!

I've watched season 1 last year on the internet and it was okay, but the second season (which I'm watching on the internet) which is up to episode 5, is really good and getting HUGE viewer numbers and is a success already. People should stick with it.

Goodish review, however with Series 2 already underway its a little dated. Its most definitely an ensemble piece with Sam, Lafayette and in particular Jason and Tara all becoming much more rounded and to be honest far more interesting characters than Sookie and Bill. Those two anchor the show, but the trails and tribulations of the others are what gives the show its bite. The remaining supporting cast members are slowly fleshed out creating a weird but well realised (and highly eroticised) alternate reality where "odd" and "inhuman" are adjectives that can be applied to pretty much any of the characters, whether they have fangs or not. Stick with it, its pays off. Definitely one of the better written and produced american shows in recent years. View it as a more brooding and sexy companion to Dexter.

After watching episode 1 I'm still abit unsure. I didn't dislike the show at all but I wasn't enthralled. Still, I'll be giving it another chance before I make up my mind.

Having seen the whole first series and right up to the latest episode, this is without a doubt one of the best shows on tv at the moment in my opinion, theres a few shockers along the way to keep you wanting more.., Sookie, Sam, Bill, Tara, Eric, Jason and Lafayette are great characters. The Biggest problem about True Blood is having to wait a whole week for the next ep :)

Brilliant first show, I'll definitely be looking out for this one. Just watched it for the second time with some friends. I loved the twisted humour throughout. I too liked Tara straight away, unlike the reviewer. I loved the scene with her and the chef in the bar, with the poor customer seemingly wondering what he's walked into the middle of.

Forget the series, its nasty. Read the books unstead, they are sooooooooo much better! The series leaves out the best stuff from them, and substitutes some pretty gross sex scenes for plot.

Having seen the entire first series and read the books that the series is based, all i can say is keep watching - it is fangtastic ;)
