The Thor actor revealed that he was asked to be on the HBO series, which stars his son Alexander, but had to turn down the offer because he is too busy.
"I don't have the time," Stellan told E! News.
Stellan went on to praise his son's work on the show, saying that he has never imparted any advice to the 35-year-old.
"I think it's very well done and he's great in it," he said. "I don't give him any advice at all, because for my kids, from the age of 16 their lives are their responsibility. If he had the feeling that it was thanks to me that he had any of his success, it would just be half a success. He owes everything to himself."
Alexander recently admitted that he sometimes feels pigeonholed into the same type of role as his True Blood character Eric Northman.
The actor previously credited his father with teaching him to keep quiet about personal details, saying there are certain things that should be kept private.
Season 4 of True Blood airs at 9pm on Sundays on HBO in the US. It is due to premiere in the UK on FX this winter.
