Eric Kripke said viewers will be treated to a "jaw-dropping" third season finale before meeting a "new species" of supernatural being in the next run.
He told E Online!: "We're gonna spend a little less time talking about giant movements and war and more time talking about the brothers' relationship and how they react to that war.
"I think we sort of have a new species of supernatural being that we'll be introducing in season four that will take people by surprise. We have a few tricks up our sleeves."
Talking about the countdown towards Dean (Jensen Ackles) going down to hell in exchange for the life of brother Sam (Jared Padalecki) following his deal with the Crossroads Demon, Kripke said: "His soul is coming due, and the boys are getting more desperate, trying to find ways to stop it."
He added that the current season will see the end of the storyline involving Lauren Cohan's character Bela, saying: "It's not great news for her, and we show a couple of cards we've been holding onto all season, and we sort of reveal why she is, who she is and what kind of secrets she's been holding, in a way that will surprise the audience and kind of tie her into the story.
"We've already announced elsewhere that Lauren will not be coming back next year, so I think we kind of send her off in an appropriate and dramatic way."
