Season 7, episode 11 | Aired Monday, Jan 9 2012 at 10:27 GMT on Sky Living

Supernatural returns after the Christmas break - so what exactly has happened to Bobby? It's revealed that the grizzled hunter has indeed passed away - as the weeks go by, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) move past their grief and turn their attention to the numbers that Bobby passed on to them with his dying breath - 45489...

The Winchesters are surprised when Bobby's phone rings - a frantic young girl is on the line. The caller hangs up when she learns that Bobby's unavailable and Sam wants to track her down using the caller ID, but Dean insists on visiting their fellow hunter Frank Deveraux, to whom he sent Bobby's numbers for decryption weeks before.

Sam arrives at the young girl's home - she's Krissy (Madison McLaughlin) and her father Lee (Ian Tracey) has gone missing. Inspecting Lee's wardrobe, Sam finds a stash of torn-out newspaper reports - coverage of bizarre deaths and missing person cases - and realises that Lee too was a hunter!

Dean meanwhile pays Frank a visit, but the unstable hunter is even more paranoid than usual. Now taking refuge in a mobile HQ, he's convinced that a Leviathan lies around every corner...

Still, Frank remains a useful asset - he's realised that Bobby's numbers are co-ordinates, leading to a field in Wisconsin, and to a parcel, recently purchased by Richard Roman Enterprises - a front for Leviathan leader (and Bobby's killer) Dick Roman.

Meanwhile, Sam discovers that three truckers have also vanished alongside Lee. The younger Winchester believes that he is hunting a Vetala - a vampire-like creature that usually hunts alone and feeds slow, keeping its victim alive for as long as possible...

Visiting the diner where Lee was last seen, Sam is advised by a waitress named Marlene to speak with Sally, a hooker who was spotted with the missing hunter. But once he's outside, Marlene jumps Sam - she and Sally are both Vetala, and Sam, unprepared for the two-pronged attack, is quickly incapacitated by their venom-laced fangs!

Dean and Frank have been busy hacking into the security cameras already in position around the Wisconsin field and capture footage of Amanda Willer - an employee of Dick Roman - surveying the area. Seems like the Leviathans are planning to build something in the area - but what?

As their mission continues, Dean is growing increasingly morose - he's still far from over Bobby's recent demise. When he dismisses Frank's suggestion that he quit the hunting life, Dean learns that his ally's own family were slaughtered years before.

Frank tells Dean that to being an effective hunter means being professional. "Do it right, with a smile, or don't do it," he warns.

Dean doesn't have long to ponder Frank's words - he receives a call from Krissy, who reveals that Sam has disappeared. When he wakes, Sam finds himself held alongside Lee, who's been fed on multiple times and is close to death...

Following in his brother's footsteps, Dean visits Krissy and learns that the teenager is well aware of her father's unusual lifestyle. When Dean announces his plan to stage a rescue mission, Krissy insists on tagging along. She's destroyed all of her father's work, but committed it to memory, so a reluctant Dean is forced to take her along for the ride...

Arriving at Sally and Marlene's hunting grounds - the diner - Dean and Krissy spot the waitress jumping aboard a truck and decide to follow her, their suspicion peaked. But when they arrive at Vetala HQ, Dean tricks Krissy, hand-cuffing her to the steering wheel of the Impala...

Dean launches his assault on the creatures and is inches away from finishing off Marlene, but Krissy has broken free and makes an attempt to rescue her father. When Sally grabs the hapless teen, Dean is forced to surrender...

But Krissy isn't so useless after all - she escapes from Sally's clutches, stabbing the Vetala to death and freeing Sam, who then kills Marlene.

In the aftermath, the Winchesters visit a recovering Lee in hospital. Dean tells the bed-ridden hunter that he should quit the hunting life and spare his daughter the same fate that has befallen him. But Lee insists that no-one ever leaves the life and Dean eventually agrees, "They all get killed first."

After bidding a fond farewell to Krissy, Dean returns to the road with Sam - their next move is to track down Dick Roman. Recalling Frank's words of advice, Dean acts like a "professional" and forces a smile as his long journey continues...

Dean Winchester
Carry On, My Wayward Son...
• Following on from Bobby's tragic death, 'Adventures in Babysitting' feels like a mini-reboot for Supernatural - Sam and Dean are out on their own, without their faithful old friend by their side...
• But are they entirely alone? This writer got the feeling that Frank Deveraux is being lined up as something of a Bobby replacement. Kevin McNally is a fine actor, but it's a little soon to be considering a fill-in - we still miss Jim Beaver!
• Speaking of which, Bobby's final fate is yet to be resolved - the midseason finale left us hanging and it's still unclear whether he 'moved on' with Death or remained on Earth as a spirit...
• But does Dean's mysteriously vanishing beer perhaps provide us with a clue? If Bobby was still hanging around in spirit form, we suspect stealing Dean's brew is just the kind of thing he'd be up to!
• One of the few flaws in this relatively solid episode is the character of Krissy. It's not actress Madison McLaughlin who's at fault - precocious teen characters are almost always an irritant. But, alas, we suspect that we haven't seen the last of this character either.
