Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Williamson said that the episode will provide a conclusion to the historical storyline.
"[The finale is] building to the Founder's Day Celebration. That will be our last episode of the season," he said.
"We will bring that historical storyline somewhat to a close and at the same time, we will start the next chapter. We will involve some of the town council and we will also take it to the next level."
The Vampire Diaries continues Thursdays at 8pm on The CW in the US and Tuesdays at 9pm on ITV2 in the UK.
