Viewers saw his character John stabbed to death by vampire Katherine in the show's first season finale.
However, former Heroes star Anders has confirmed that he will star in the second season premiere and may reappear later.
He told Entertainment Weekly: "They haven’t picked up [my] option yet. I feel like the character has a lot of legs and you can go in many different directions with him. But ultimately it's [executive producer] Kevin Williamson's choice."
Of his character's fate, Anders teased: "People don't always die from knife wounds."
The actor also revealed that he will make a guest appearance on the second season of SyFy's Warehouse 13 as a "fugitive from the past".
"There's time travel involved," he explained. "I run a magazine back in the '60s."
The second season of The Vampire Diaries is due to air from September on The CW.
