The executive producer of The Vampire Diaries has claimed that the show won't "jump the shark".

In an interview with DS at Comic-Con, Kevin Williamson explained that he is planning to "up the ante" on the show.

"But at the same time we're not going to jump the shark," he continued. "You know, I hate when those shows just keep trying to shock you and shock you and shock you for no other reason than to shock you, and that's not our game strategy. We just want to tell good stories."

Williamson added: "We want to make sure that it's emotional. And that the audience can connect to it. So we're going to up the ante with regard to the emotional stakes. But with regard to trying to shock the audience, if it works we will.

"It comes up a lot - how are we going to top ourselves? And we're not going to. We're just going to try to tell good stories and continue it."

The Vampire Diaries returns for its second season on September 9 on The CW.
