Ford told E! Online that her character will meet Alaric (Matt Davis), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) when they visit Duke University.
"I play Vanessa Monroe, a Duke University grad student who's helping Alaric, Damon and Elena with Isobel's research," she said. "It's a nice arc."
Ford added that Vanessa will struggle to come to terms with the existence of vampires, saying: "Vanessa has a conflict because she studies all this wonderful mythology and folklore, but half of her is a complete sceptic. Half of her is a believer, and half of her is a sceptic, and she goes back and forth. It's a big conflict for her."
Ford also hinted that she will have a love interest on the show but refused to reveal any more details.
"I want to tell you so much but I can't," she said. "They'll kill me if I reveal too much!"
The Vampire Diaries returns on September 9 on The CW.
