In the episode of the show which aired in the States last week, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) appeared to murder Kinney's character Mason by ripping out his heart.
However, Kinney told Zap2It that the writers on the show are always open to changing their storylines.
"They have an outline for the season, where they want to take it, but they also leave in the opportunity to see what happens with the characters, see what storylines are working and to look at the chemistry," he explained. "They're not necessarily married to one idea."
Kinney added that Mason could reappear, saying: "Stranger things have happened. It's a supernatural show, and you still don't know the full weight and power of this moonstone.
"The experience was so positive. It wasn't like hearing the news of the death scene upset me. Just to be a part of it was humbling and was a great experience. If they find a way to bring back and have him plot his revenge, then great. If not... great."
Kinney also revealed that he was thrilled to be a part of the series, saying: "The show's just going to get better and better. They have a ton more surprises in store."
The Vampire Diaries continues on Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW.
