Bonnie (Katerina Graham) recently started dating Jeremy (Steven R McQueen) and used witchcraft to revive him when he was killed in the season finale.
However, when he returned to life he discovered that he can now see his dead ex-girlfriends Vicki (Kayla Ewell) and Anna (Malese Jow).
Plec has now told Entertainment Weekly that the development could cause problems in Bonnie and Jeremy's romance.
"Because of her love for Jeremy and bringing him back to life, [Bonnie's] given him access to two people who were very important to him romantically and emotionally," she said. "So for the first time, we'll get to see Bonnie trying to navigate the difficulties of a relationship."
Plec continued: "It's not about being a witch or having access to the power of 100 witches. It's about being a girl who loves a boy whose heart is a little bit torn in different directions.
"I think it will be nice for us to see Bonnie explore some good relationship stuff for a change instead of just being the witch on duty."
The Vampire Diaries will return for a new season on September 15 at 8/7c on The CW.
