The Vampire Diaries' executive producer Julie Plec has revealed that "ultimately, there will be a payoff" in the relationship between Damon and Elena.

Plec suggested to TV Line that there will be some developments in the pair's will-they-won't-they storyline in upcoming episodes.

"We're not in the business of the eternal tease that never goes anywhere," she said. "That's not how we like to tell our stories."

However, Plec added that the developments may take fans aback, saying: "[Especially] what it is and when it happens may be surprising to people."

Plec also dropped hints about the arrival of new character Dr Fell, played by guest star Torrey DeVitto.

Dr Fell could be a love interest for Alaric (Matt Davis) but Plec teased that she is "definitely more than what she seems" and revealed that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will be unhappy about her presence.

"Her interest in [Alaric] makes Damon concerned and suspicious about what she might be hiding," she revealed. "[He tries to find out if she] is worthy of any kind of relationship with his buddy. He doesn't necessarily like what he finds."

Plec has previously revealed that Elena (Nina Dobrev) will be unhappy with Stefan (Paul Wesley) as he becomes obsessed with getting rid of Klaus (Joseph Morgan).

The Vampire Diaries returns with a new episode tonight at 8/7c on The CW.
