The actor admitted that he prefers to play tortured vampire Stefan when the character is allowed to embrace his dark side, and hopes that this will play into his response to Elena's (Nina Dobrev) transformation into a vampire.
"I think right now [he's feeling] a lot of guilt and rage," Wesley told Hitfix of Stefan's mental state in the fourth-season premiere, "over the fact that he was the one who caused [Elena's death].
"I'd like to see Stefan go to the dark side... I personally prefer Ripper Stefan, so I'm hoping that the guilt drives him to a place of darkness."
Wesley went on to hint that Elena may become closer to Stefan's brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder), after her new undead state allows her to recover memories which he had previously compelled her to forget.
"Elena's remembering some things from when Damon compelled her, so I think it's sort of building back to romance with the two of them. Stefan is being her rock.
"But you know, at a certain point Elena may blame him, he may turn to some darkness. I've heard some rumours about Stefan having a new love interest, but I don't know if that's true or not."
