CW boss on 'Vampire Diaries' spinoff: 'Klaus is a great character'

By
The CW's president Mark Pedowitz has revealed more details about the planned Vampire Diaries spinoff.

The Originals would follow the character of Klaus (Joseph Morgan) as he returns to his old haunt in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

"We're basically going to focus on the Original family," Pedowitz confirmed at the TCA press tour. "Klaus is one of the founding fathers in New Orleans, and the show will be set in that venue.

"Klaus is just a great character and the Original family has such great dysfunctional family dynamics, we felt that that was a great way to go and take the show."

The network chief explained that the "genesis" of the potential series came from conversations with Warner Bros.

"We spoke with [Vampire Diaries producers] Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, and Kevin said, 'Let Julie take a run at it. It's her vision'," explained Pedowitz.

Phoebe Tonkin will also appear in The Originals as werewolf Hayley - a season four episode of The Vampire Diaries will serve as a 'backdoor pilot' for the in-the-works drama.

The Vampire Diaries continues on The CW in the US and airs on ITV2 in the UK.
