In the fourth season finale, it emerged that Stefan is a doppelganger of Silas, and Stefan ended up locked in a safe at the bottom of a lake.

Wesley told journalists at San Diego's Comic-Con that he "loves" the twist, saying: "I love the challenge and I love that Stefan is in the bottom of a lake. I love him, but at the same time, I feel like I need a little space from Stefan right now."
Wesley - who revealed that Stefan is "having hallucinations" in the lake - joked that co-star Nina Dobrev has not yet given him any tips about playing a doppelganger but said he's looking forward to pulling double duty.
"I'm not looking forward to the extra hours and having to work all day," he joked. "But yeah, I am. It's definitely a challenge. I've never done anything like this before."
Wesley also suggested that his portrayal of Silas will be "different" from 'Ripper Stefan', saying: "I don't think he shows his colours as much - I think he has a lot of fun. I'm going to approach him in a very light way. I'm going to have a lot of fun with Silas."

The actor claimed that the other characters will "eventually" find out that Silas is impersonating Stefan, but explained that for the moment the two will be hard to distinguish, saying: "Initially he's impersonating Stefan, so it's similar. But I think eventually it's going to be obvious, very apparent, who's who."
Wesley also expressed an interest in what Stefan will do when he is free from the lake, joking that he will "get a beer" and "smoke a cigarette".
"I'm curious to see how they're going to write that," he continued. "What sort of place he will be in, psychologically. What if he gets out and he's just like, 'Hey! Hey guys! It's all good'."

Elsewhere, Wesley explained that he would like to see The Vampire Diaries "reset itself and go back to its old school roots", saying: "I want it to unwind and not be so complicated. I want the stories to be a little simplified."
He confessed as well that he misses Lexi (Arielle Kebbel) - explaining that she "brings out the lighter side of Stefan" and could "maybe" come back - and admitted that he "really likes" the relationship between Stefan and Caroline (Candice Accola).
"Candice is fantastic and we have great chemistry," he said. "I don't know what's going to happen there. I really don't. I truly don't know anything. But I hope Stefan gets some action. I hope Silas gets some action, actually, come to think of it. That would be great."
The Vampire Diaries returns with its new season on October 10 on The CW.
