Julia Stiles has promised that her Dexter character Lumen is not a replacement for Rita.

Lumen appeared at the end of the last episode when Dexter (Michael C. Hall) found her in the house of his latest target, Boyd.

Stiles has now told E! Online that the relationship between Dexter and Lumen is "charged".

"Lumen is not a replacement for Rita," she said. "The relationship that she has with Dexter is very unconventional. It's intimate, but this is not your typical romance that you would see anywhere else. Their connection is one that is really profound."

Stiles also refused to confirm whether or not Dexter and Lumen fall in love, saying: "It depends on your definition of love. There are many different ways to show love that can be interpreted in many different ways. Plus, emotions with Dexter are already so unconventional that it's hard to put the word love in there."

Stiles added that Lumen is hiding something but admitted that she does not know what to expect for her character.

"Lumen does have a secret that she's carrying around," she said. "But I'm convinced that I'm going to have some big surprise thrown at me about her in the next final three episodes. The writers are very good at keeping everything a secret."

Dexter continues on Sundays at 9pm on Showtime.
