Hall was recently nominated for an Emmy for his performance as serial killer Dexter Morgan in the Showtime drama.
Clarifying his comments, he told TV Guide: "It's a lightness [but] within the context of someone who's killing people left and right."
Hall confirmed that Dexter will explore issues of faith as he continues to raise his infant son Harrison.
"Because he has a son, Dexter's view of himself and his place in the world has broadened beyond his own immediate concerns," said the actor. "It's a new challenge to have a character who would deny God's existence altogether [and] to unpeel this layer of human emotion."
Hall also refused to rule out the possibility of a new romance for Dexter, following the departure of Lumen (Julia Stiles).
"If nothing else, the relationship with Lumen revealed that the appetite exists in him," he said. "The fact that Lumen was in a position to not only accept, but require, his deepest darkest self was both irresistible and unsustainable."
Dexter will return to Showtime in the fall. The drama's fifth season currently airs in the UK on FX.
